I wonder if you will see the same pattern I do.
Over the weekend, a friend who raises money for a children’s charity gave me a blow by blow of some of her recent successes.
- She wrote a thank you note by hand to a couple for their past support, and mentioned that things must be really hard right now in the wife’s job because of research budget cuts.
- She requested the founder of the organization to introduce her someone who has connected them to many other people in the past.
- She asked for a meeting to get advice from a couple who have only given a little money, but have volunteered time for years.
All of these ended up with people doubling their giving.
Circling back to job hunting, maybe you see it.
My friend is building genuine, time intensive connections with people.
They know that she is reaching out to raise money.
And they are responding to her, because she want a connection with them, not just a fat check.
She’s also not going in cold with complete strangers.
She’s connecting with people who have already said yes.
What could this look like for you?
- Reaching out to former coworkers to find out what’s going on in their lives
- Requesting a friend connect you with someone who works where you want to work
- Asking advice of the person who has the kind of career that you want
If you want to make a plan for your next job that comes from this kind of human connecting, hit reply and tell me what’s up.
