Intensity and Recovery

I love seeing excellence in any field.

I’ve been watching YouTube videos of Jack H Woods, who has stripped down strength training to the essentials. He creates remarkable results by training each range of movement right at the point of failure for one set, once a week.

Our bodies are best stimulated to adapt and grow stronger if we work at the absolute limit of our capacity. And that we can’t, and shouldn’t, work at that level of intensity for more than a few minutes at a time.

The real growth and change happens in the rest and recovery the rest of the week.

We rest and adapt.

And our bodies get stronger.

What if we applied this to career growth?

Taking one set of actions, once a week, that pushed us to limit:

  • Sending out one scary email to connect and learn from someone we respect
  • Bringing our full attention to one deep conversation
  • Practicing negotiating

And then taking the rest of the week to reflect, absorb, adapt to what we’ve learned.

Do you want to work like that on your career? If so, let’s talk.
