Does the way you get paid create a conflict of interest between you and your client?
Jonathan Stark clearly described something I was just feeling in my gut – Hourly Billing is Nuts (the title of his book).
I recommend his daily email for consistently bringing the point home.
If you get paid more the longer you work, it is not in your best interest to increase efficiency and scope creep is inevitable.
So what’s the alternative?
There are many possibilities, once you are aware of the problem.
- Pricing for outcomes
- Productized services
- Retainers
- Profit Sharing
If you are doing difficult, valuable work, you can spend some time being creative about how you get paid.
Jonathan’s work is why my offerings are a combination of time bound groups at a flat cost and monthly retainers.
