There is an old joke that goes: 

Machines run on smoke. 

When smoke comes out, they stop working.

There’s a little confusion of cause and effect which makes this funny.

Something breaking inside the machine is causing both the smoke and the stop.

It is easy to think the cause is the most visible result.
